Your impressions dropped off a cliff, your replies feel invisible, and somewhere around 2am you typed "am I shadowbanned" into a search engine. Before you paste your handle into a random checker site: most of them are guessing, some are scraping fragile signals that break monthly, and a few just want your login.

The short version: X doesn't use the word "shadowban," but it does apply real, individually testable visibility limits. The three that matter: search suggestion ban, search ban, and reply deboosting. Our free X Shadowban Self-Test generates the exact check links for your handle and walks you through interpreting each result — no login, no scraping, you see the evidence yourself.

The three real limits

1. Search suggestion ban. Your handle stops appearing in the autocomplete dropdown when logged-out users type it. Mildest and most common. Test: logged-out browser, start typing your exact handle in X search — if it never suggests you but your account exists, that's the signal.

2. Search ban. Your posts stop appearing in search results — even exact-phrase matches from your account return nothing. Test: search from:yourhandle logged out. Results = fine. An account that posts daily returning zero = the signal. (Handy corollary: X search operators are the diagnostic instrument here.)

3. Reply deboosting. Your replies get collapsed behind "Show more replies" for people who don't follow you. Most damaging for growth, since replies are most of the game for small accounts. Test: reply to a busy post, then view that post from a logged-out browser and see where your reply lands.

The tool's job is mostly rigor: it builds these checks for your handle, sequences them, and helps you read ambiguous results — because a single flaky search result isn't a verdict.

Wait — is it a shadowban, or is the algorithm just not feeding you?

The honest section. Low reach and visibility limits look identical from inside. X's ranking simply shows most posts to few people; a quiet week is usually distribution variance, not punishment. Check the three tests above — if all three pass, you're not limited. You have a content problem, which is better news than it sounds: content is fixable. Start with why posts look weak after posting and whether your posts trip the spam-pattern wires.

What actually triggers visibility limits

No official list exists; these patterns recur in documented cases:

  • Aggressive automation — mass-following, mass-liking, bot-like posting cadence
  • Spam-pattern content — repeated identical posts, hashtag pileups, link-only posting from a young account
  • Reports and blocks clustering in a short window
  • Engagement-bait patterns — and increasingly, the tells of low-effort AI-generated content
  • New-account velocity — doing everything above in your first week

Note what's not on the list: posting links occasionally, using a scheduler, disagreeing with people. A scheduler that publishes posts you individually approved is normal client behavior — that approval step is exactly how we built ours.

If a test comes back positive

  1. Stop the behavior that plausibly caused it. Pause automation, cut the hashtag blocks, break the identical-post pattern.
  2. Post normally, engage manually, wait. Suggestion bans commonly lift within days to a few weeks; there is no support ticket that speeds this up for a normal account.
  3. Re-test weekly, not hourly. The self-test takes five minutes; obsessive re-checking just feeds the 2am spiral.
  4. Audit while you wait. The 20-point creator audit covers most of what quietly suppresses accounts anyway.

Run it

Five minutes, your own eyes on the evidence: X Shadowban Self-Test. Free, no login, part of the tools collection — and genuinely, we hope the result is "you're fine, go write better hooks." (That's fixable too.)
